Man dies after being pulled from water at Lāwa‘i Beach; second ocean death over weekend on Kauaʻi

A visitor died Sunday afternoon after being pulled from waters off Lāwa‘i Beach.

First responders were dispatched to Lāwa‘i Beach following reports of an unresponsive snorkeler at about 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Bystanders brought the individual to shore and began performing CPR. Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel continued lifesaving efforts until medics transported him to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Gavin Phillips, a 56-year-old man from California.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but foul play is not suspected. The Kaua‘i Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Gavin Phillips during this difficult time.

This was the second ocean-related death over the weekend. A man died Saturday afternoon after being pulled from waters off Waiapuaʻa Bay.

The Ocean Safety Bureau urges visitors and residents to exercise caution when enjoying ocean activities.

Recommended safety practices include:

• Swim at beaches with lifeguards and consult them about safe swimming areas.
• Use the buddy system and avoid swimming alone.
• Observe ocean conditions for at least 15 minutes before entering the water.
• Always face the ocean and be aware of unexpected waves.
• If caught in a rip current, remain calm, signal for help, and swim parallel to shore.
