Rising moderate northwest swell triggers high surf advisory for parts of Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau

A rising moderate long-period northwest swell will gradually rise this afternoon and peak tonight into Sunday.

That swell and the associated waves it will generate triggered the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu to issue a high surf advisory or north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau that goes into effect at noon today (Nov. 22) and runs through 6 p.m Sunday (Nov. 23).

Surf will peak at 10 to 15 feet along northern shorelines and 8 to 12 feet along those shorelines on the west side of both islands.

Forecasters said the impacts from the high surf event will likely be moderate. Strong breaking waves and strong currents also will make swimming dangerous.

The public is reminded to heed all advice from ocean safety officials, and when in doubt, don’t go out.
