Hiker suffering from reported ankle pain rescued off Kalalau Trail
A woman visiting from O‘ahu was rescued from the Kalalau Trail after suffering from reported ankle pain from a preexisting injury.
Kaua‘i Fire Department received a text to 911 at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The 40-year-old woman indicated she was unable to safely self-evacuate.
Personnel with the Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly before 9:30 a.m. First responders arrived on scene near the red hill landing zone and discovered the hiker, who was capable of walking.
The woman was able to walk unassisted to Air 1, but in accordance with safety procedures, rescuers escorted her into the helicopter, which then transported her to Princeville Airport. Upon landing at the Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to the Princeville fire station personnel and American Medical Response.
The hiker refused further medical care.
The scene was cleared shortly after 11 a.m.
