High surf advisory issued for north and west-facing shores of Kaua’i and Ni’ihau

A high surf advisory has been placed in effect through Thursday afternoon for north- and west-facing shores across Niʻihau and Kauaʻi as large winter swells continue to build along the islands’ exposed coastlines, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters expect surf of 10 to 15 feet along most north-facing shores, rising to 14 to 18 feet around Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. West-facing shores are projected to see waves between 8 and 12 feet.
The swell is expected to gradually ease after midday Thursday.
The National Weather Service warned that strong breaking waves and powerful currents will create hazardous ocean conditions, making swimming and nearshore activities dangerous. Ocean safety officials are urging beachgoers, surfers and visitors to use caution and avoid entering the water if unsure of conditions.
Residents and visitors are advised to heed all warnings, follow instructions from lifeguards and remain vigilant near the shoreline. “When in doubt, don’t go out,” the agency said.
