Learn how to turn food waste into local resource during upcoming compost forum
Zero Waste Kauaʻi invites community members to the first Garden Island Compost Forum — a free online event designed to empower island residents to turn food waste into a local resource.
The forum is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18 on Zoom.

Composting offers one of the most powerful ways to reduce waste, nourish soil, support island farmers and strengthen island resilience, especially with Kauaʻi’s landfill nearing capacity — and projected to run out of space in just 5 years.
Plus, nearly 25% of the landfill’s material is compostable.
“Together, we can change that,” said Zero Waste Kauaʻi in its forum announcement.
Those who attend the online forum will learn:
- Why composting is essential for Kauaʻi.
- Simple ways to start and maintain compost at home.
- Community-scale composting.
- Managing green waste to prevent the spread of coconut rhinoceros beetle.
- Information about county programs, get free bins & more.
Also participating to share their knowledge will be SEVERAL LOCAL EXPERTS:
- Compost Kauaʻi co-founder Jesse Brown-Clay.
- Kauaʻi County Council member, ecologist and advocate Fern Ānuenue Holland.
- Kauaʻi County Recycling Program Coordinator Andy Boyd.
- Understory Alliance Executive Director and founder Sari Pastore.
The forum includes short educational presentations, question-and-answer sessions and open community discussion. So whether you’re new to composting or looking to deepen your practice, this forum is for you.
RSVP online or register on Zoom to join the forum.
