Hawai‘i Department of Health Food and Drug Branch alerts residents to a recall issued by Moonlight Companies for its Moonlight yellow and white peaches because of the potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes identified where the fruit was packaged.

The recalled fruit was distributed nationwide between Sept. 16 and Oct. 29 to retailers and supermarkets such as Costco, Target, Whole Foods, Times Supermarkets and Big Save in Hawai‘i.

Food and Drug Branch officials are working with these stores to ensure the recalled product is no longer available for sale.

The peaches in question were either sold as individual pieces bearing PLU stickers or as multipacks. This recall does not include packages or PLU stickers with the words “Washington” and/or “Organic.”

The disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems.

Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

Healthy people can suffer symptoms such as:

  • Fever.
  • Severe headache.
  • Muscle aches.
  • Stiffness.
  • Nausea.
  • Abdominal pain and/or diarrhea.

Although people can develop listeriosis up to 2 months after eating contaminated food, symptoms usually begin within several days of consumption, often with diarrhea.

Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics.

Contact your health care provider immediately if you are exhibiting symptoms after having consumed any of the recalled fruit.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse events to date attributed to the recalled fruit.
