MTB Kaua‘i — a new nonprofit educational association for mountain bikers in Kaua‘i County — is officially up and rolling, on a mission to create, enhance and preserve a world-class network of mountain biking trails throughout Kaua’i County.

It will raise awareness and enthusiasm for a healthy outdoor activity while also fostering the next generation of mountain bicyclists, introducing keiki to the sport.

MTB Kaua‘i — born from the passion of a small group of island residents who for decades maintained trails around the Garden Isle — emphasizes environmental stewardship beyond the thrill of the ride as well, planning trail maintenance activities to remove invasive species and replant native Hawaiian plants.

The association is in the process of formalizing efforts to make mountain biking a major sport on the island, and the announcement of its official kick off only strengthens that push.

Various land owners will be contacted by the association to establish official trail networks with clear mapping and signage while providing education on progressive skill development and safety to its members and other riders.

This will ensure the protection and longevity of the trails.

“This is an exciting time for mountain biking on Kaua‘i,” said MTB Kaua‘i Chairman Bob Morrell in an announcement about the new nonprofit and its efforts. “Our island has incredible potential, and our goal is to bring the community together to make that potential a reality. Every member and volunteer directly contributes to the trails they love to ride, ensuring their future for generations to come.”

Membership is vital to the association’s success. It also provides the member with a number of valuable benefits.

Members get exclusive opportunities for community involvement through volunteer trail maintenance and organized group rides. They also receive a 10% discount on mountain bike parts and priority repairs at participating bike shops.

Membership fees and volunteer efforts are crucial for funding necessary tools, materials and professional maintenance required to create and protect the island’s single track.
