Injured 58-year-old visitor rescued while hiking Kalalau Trail

Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel on Oct. 7 rescued an injured 58-year-old visitor who was hiking the Garden Isle’s iconic Kalalau Trail.

First responders were notified about the hiker shortly after 9:35 a.m. Personnel with Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded.

They discovered upon arriving near the 1.5-mile marker landing zone that the hiker had suffered an apparent head injury. Initial first aid was administered at the scene.

The hiker was then taken to the landing zone, loaded into the helicopter and taken to Princeville Airport.

An American Medical Response team was waiting in Princeville and took over the hiker’s treatment when the helicopter landed, providing further medical care.

The scene was cleared shortly after 11:15 a.m.
