A 61-year-old visitor from California died Monday afternoon after being rescued from the waters off ‘Anini Beach Park on Kauai’s North Shore.

First responders were called to the scene around 3 p.m. after reports of a swimmer in distress. Officials reported that the man, identified as Todd Wilt, experienced difficulty while swimming and was assisted to shore, where he collapsed shortly after.

Lifeguards from the Ocean Safety Bureau immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation before paramedics transported Wilt to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaʻa.

Despite continued resuscitation efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
