Update: High surf advisory remains in effect for north and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau
Update, 3:44 p.m., Oct 5: Officials with the National Weather Service have extended the high surf advisory until midnight tonight.
The Kauaʻi Ocean Safety Bureau officials advise no swimming on north-facing shores of Kaua‘i due to hazardous ocean conditions. This advisory is for all beaches beginning with Hanalei, going westward.
As a safety precaution, ocean safety has posted warning signs and are monitoring the area.
Original Post: A high surf advisory is in effect along the north and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the swell that arrived overnight was much larger than predicted, resulting in surf heights of 12 to 16 feet along north shores and 8 to 12 feet along west shores.
The high surf advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Conditions are expected to gradually decrease below advisory levels later tonight.
Ocean Safety Officials are advising against swimming due to hazardous ocean conditions. This advisory affects all beaches from Hanalei to the west side.
Strong breaking waves and powerful currents will make swimming and shoreline activities dangerous.
