Update: Search continues Friday for man missing in waters off Princeville

Update 8 a.m., Sept. 26: The U.S. Coast guard said Friday morning that the search continues in waters off of Princeville for missing 37-year-old Kyle Barrett, who was last seen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday near the entrance to the Queen’s Bath trailhead on Kauaʻi. 

There have been no leads in the search. Later today, there will be a multi-agency meeting to determine the timeline of the search, which is now in its third day.

Update 3 p.m., Sept. 25: The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday afternoon that the search continues in waters off of Princeville for missing 37-year-old Kyle Barrett, who was last seen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday near the entrance to the Queen’s Bath trailhead on Kauaʻi. 

The Coast Guard, along with local Kauaʻi agencies, have been searching for 20 hours, covering 1,600 square miles.

The search will continue overnight and despite the rain, with no current helicopter restrictions, the Coast Guard said.

Original post: The U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies searched on Wednesday for a man in the water offshore of Kauai.  

Missing is Kyle Barrett, 37, who was last seen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday near the entrance to the Queen’s Bath trailhead on Kauaʻi.

Barrett is 6 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs approximately 210 pounds, and has brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, dark shorts and sunglasses. 

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received a notification at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday from Kauaʻi Fire Department personnel of a possible person in the water near Princeville.  

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Station Kauaʻi 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point. The Coast Guard Cutter William Hart crew also launched for the search.

Coast Guard teams have so far searched for a combined 11 hours and covered approximately 1,670 square miles. The current on-scene weather conditions consist of 17 mph winds, 1- to 2-foot seas and 8-10 miles of visibility.  

Involved in the search are the Kauaʻi fire and police departments, Kauaʻi Ocean Safety Bureau and Kauaʻi Search and Rescue.
