Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative is urging members to exercise caution when dealing with certain solar sales representatives, after receiving several reports of misleading or high-pressure tactics by third-party contractors on Kaua‘i.

“We’ve been made aware of cases where solar sales representatives are giving customers false impressions,” said Beth Amaro, the utility cooperative’s member services and communications manager, in a news release.

Residents have reported encountering solar photovoltaic and battery system salespeople who gave false or incomplete information regarding how these products connect to the cooperative’s electric grid, as well as about rates and energy programs, according to the utility cooperative.

“It is very concerning when we receive calls from members who feel they’re being pressured or scammed by individuals selling rooftop solar systems,” Amaro said.

She emphasized that the Kauaʻi utility does not have exclusive partnerships with any solar contractors and does not conduct door-to-door sales of solar photovoltaic or battery systems.

Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative encourages residents to contact them directly for accurate, up-to-date information before signing any contracts. The utility cooperative also said it takes reports of dishonest or aggressive sales tactics seriously.

Residents who have been offered any solar energy program can call Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative at 808-246-4300, and provide as much detail as possible, such as the company name, the salesperson involved, and where and when the interaction took place.

“We will absolutely follow up with the solar contractor if unprofessional conduct is reported,” Amaro said.

“Hopefully KIUC will be your first call when considering a solar PV system,” Amaro said. “We can give you an overview of our requirements, so you have some background before talking with a solar contractor.”
