Kauaʻi Beer Company shuts down popular restaurant abruptly amid market challenges
Kaua’i Beer Company abruptly closed its popular restaurant this week, letting its patrons know by messages on the companyʻs website and social media accounts.
“After much thought and with heavy hearts, we have made the difficult decision to close our restaurant until further notice,” the message said on its website’s homepage.
The reason was due to “the current market conditions” that made the brewery’s restaurant unable to continue. The message did not elaborate on the specific conditions.
The closure came as a shock to many of its patrons, who also were saddened that the intimate microbrewery would not longer be a place for them to hang out in downtown Līhu’e.
Founded in 2013 by Jim Guerber, and who distilled his first batch of applejack at age 12, the Rice Street establishment quickly became more than just a place to get a pint. It was a hub for both residents and visitors.
Known for its original signature beers the Black Limousine and Līhu’e Lager, the brewery carved out a reputation as one of the few spaces where the island’s diverse community could gather, eat and talk story.
But on Tuesday, the brewery was closed, with three messages tapes on windows with blue painter’s tape.

For many, the abrupt closure highlights a growing concern about the fragility of small, independent businesses on the Garden Isle.
“It’s one of my favorite places to have lunch,” said Larry Grella, who works at the next-door business Eco-Ebikes Kaua’i.
“We’ll miss you,” he said through tears.
While the company has not detailed future plans, some community members are holding out hope that the brand could be revived or that the location might continue as a gathering spot.
In the meantime, locals are expressing gratitude for what the brewery gave Kaua’i over the years.
“Long live the dog,” read one comment on the company’s Facebook page. “Is this a sick joke?,” read another.
“You folks are one of Hawai’i’s Core Breweries…you need to get this fixed..!,” read another comment.
Kaua’i Beer Company said it will continue to sell wholesale and its merchandise.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible employees and our loyal customers who have supported us over the past 13 years,” said a statement on its webpage. “Together we’ve shared countless pints, laughter, friendships, and memories that we will cherish forever.
“From the bottom of our hearts: thank you for everything.”
