The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council will host its quarterly Know Your Ocean Speaker Series on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, featuring marine biologist, Dr. David Shiffman at noon via Zoom.

Sharks are some of the most ecologically important, threatened, and misunderstood animals on Earth. In this webinar, Dr. Shiffman will share his work as a marine conservation biologist and how his research uses cutting-edge interdisciplinary methods to answer policy-relevant questions about threatened species.

Dr. Shiffman is based in Washington, DC, where he studies endangered species of sharks and how to protect them. His more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles have been cited over 2,500 times, and his public-facing writing has appeared in National Geographic, the Washington Post, nationally syndicated op-eds, and a monthly column in SCUBA diving magazine.
