Kauaʻi officer is honored for his courageous, selfless rescue last month
Officer Matthew VanAken set aside any concerns to find and rescue a distressed hiker on the Kalalau Trail last month.

VanAken was working around 7 p.m. on July 22 when he was alerted by individuals reporting a missing hiker on the Kalalau Trail. Despite nightfall approaching, he proceeded down the trail to search for the missing hiker without hesitation.
He hiked nearly 1 mile into the steep and precarious terrain of the Kalalau Trail before locating the distressed hiker, alongside a Good Samaritan who was already on the scene offering assistance.
Officer VanAken assessed the hiker, who showed signs of severe muscle cramping and dehydration, and decided to carry him to safety using the fireman’s carry technique, a method where the rescuer lifts the injured person over their shoulders to navigate challenging terrain.
During the physically demanding trek back, he stayed composed and attentive, keeping the hiker calm and reassured until they reached awaiting medical personnel.
Last Friday, VanAken was honored for his selfless response during the rescue at the Kauaʻi Police Commission meeting. According to the Kauaʻi Police Department, his courage, composure, and compassion in challenging conditions exemplify the department’s core values.
“Officer VanAken set aside his own safety to render aid and protect the well-being of another,” said Chief Kalani Ke. “His willingness to assume personal risk on behalf of someone in need exemplifies the highest standards of public service and police duty.”
In recognition of his heroism, VanAken was formally recognized during the Kauaʻi Police Commission meeting and awarded the Police Commendation Medal, one of the department’s highest honors.
The body camera footage is available for those interested in watching the rescue in action.
For those interested in making a difference in lives across the island, the Kauaʻi Police Department is hiring police officers, dispatchers, public safety workers, and other civil service positions.
