North Carolina man dies after encountering trouble in waters at Keoneloa Bay

A visitor from North Carolina died Aug. 21 after being pulled from waters at Keoneloa Bay near Poʻipū.

Authorities identified the man as 39-year-old Jerome Hill.

Kauaʻi County first responders were dispatched about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 to Keoneloa Bay, also known as Shipwreck Beach, following a report of a swimmer in distress.

Hill reportedly jumped from a cliffside and encountered trouble in the water. Bystanders swam out to assist and successfully brought him to shore.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts were made until personnel from Kaua‘i Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived and began advanced lifesaving efforts.

Hill was transported in critical condition to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe. Despite continued efforts to save his life, he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy is pending to determine Hill’s exact cause of death. Foul play is not suspected.
