Kaua‘i County is currently not accepting electric or hybrid vehicles for disposal at the Puhi Metals Recycling Center until further notice.

This comes after Matson Shipping announced last month that it had temporarily suspended shipping of these vehicles due to a fire risk posed by the large lithium-ion batteries used to power the vehicles.

Due to the potential for hazardous conditions, shipping and handling procedures of these vehicles are being updated at the recycling center, according to a Kaua‘i County press release. Specialized contractors are being brought on to assist with this process.

In the meantime, owners of electric or hybrid vehicles are advised to hold on to their vehicles until the county and its contractor, Resource Recovery Solutions, LLC, can properly dispose of them.
