Līhu‘e firefighters rescue an injured visitor from Hanakāpī‘ai Falls

Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 41-year-old injured visitor from California at Hanakāpī‘ai Falls on the Kalalau Trail on Sunday afternoon, July 27.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of a distressed hiker shortly before 12:30 p.m. Personnel with Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

First responders arrived at the scene and discovered the injured hiker at Hanakāpī‘ai Falls with an apparent ankle injury. Initial first aid was administered on the scene.

The hiker was then short-hauled to the Hanakāpī‘ai Stream landing zone and loaded into the helicopter using a stokes litter, where they were taken to Princeville Airport. Upon landing at Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to Hanalei Fire Station personnel and American Medical Response for further medical care.

The scene was cleared shortly after 12:40 p.m.
