Residents, businesses, and other organizations can bring unwanted or unneeded items for reuse during a collection event this Friday.

The Kauaʻi Resource Center, 3460 Ahukini Road, is hosting the next reuse collection event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday (July 25).

The main purpose behind the County of Kauaʻi Reuse Program is to assist thrift stores by facilitating the off-loading of unsaleable, but still useable items as well as reducing the amount of reusable items going to the landfill.

Moving the unsaleable items out of thrift stores will allow more capacity to be built up for the public to donate new material that can be sold. Thrift stores can call 808-241-4838 to schedule free monthly pick-up service courtesy of Goodwill Industries of Hawaii.

Items that are accepted for reuse include clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books, and shoes. Clothing and textiles do not need to be in good condition, and torn or stained clothing is acceptable.

The public must contact their local thrift stores before bringing items to the Kaua‘i Resource Center. If a local thrift store is unaware of the program, direct them to call the County’s Solid Waste Recycling Program Coordinator at 808-241-4838 or aboyd@kauai.gov.

Do not bring eWaste, chemicals, appliances, baby items other than clothing, or broken items.

Due to health and safety concerns, heavy equipment in the area, and to reduce the chance of injury to customers unloading heavy items, Goodwill requests that the public remain in their vehicles while on-site.

After the reuse event, materials will be shipped to Oʻahu or Hilo for further processing for sale in local markets or abroad.

No scavenging or resale of material will be allowed at the Kauaʻi Resource Center. Items cannot be removed once they are dropped off.
