“After overcoming significant challenges related to manufacturing, shipping and extensive repairs, the Department of Water has successfully restored the Hanalei Water System to dependable and safe operation,” said Department of Water Manager and Chief Engineer Joe Tait in the county’s announcement. “We commend the entire community of Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach for their commitment to conserving water during this crucial time.”

A water conservation request was issued April 4 for customers in the Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach communities as a precautionary measure following the failure of a pump motor at the Maka Ridge Pump Station, affecting a 250,000-gallon water storage tank.

The Hanalei Water System is supplied by the Maka Ridge Well.

Customers in both communities were asked for a total of 3 months to limit their water usage to essential needs only until the pump station problem was repaired and the conservation request was finally lifted at just before noon also on July 5.

Princeville Utilities Co. stepped in to provide water to the Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach areas. The county Water Department expressees its appreciation to Princeville Utilities Manager Brad Suizu for his help maintaining a continuous water supply to both communities after the pump failure and during repairs.

The department also extends its gratitude to Derrick and Cynthia Moreira of Derrick’s Well Drilling & Pump Services — which services Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island, where it also is based — for their support during this challenging time.

Their ability to prioritize this project, mobilize quickly and provide the replacement pump and appurtenances enabled the department to restore the Hanalei Water System to normal operations in a very short time frame.
