Kaua‘i community celebrated Disney’s new live-action “Lilo & Stitch” film and the story’s connection to the Garden Island.

Festivities last week included Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami declaring July 2, 2025, as “Sydney Elizebeth Agudong Day.”

Agudong, born and raised on Kaua‘i, plays Nani, the older sister and guardian to the adorable and mischievous girl Lilo, who befriends a runaway alien.

The movie, a reimagining of the 2002 animated classic, opened in theaters on May 23 at No. 1 around the world. Already it has earned more than $600 million globally, according to the Associated Press.

The Waimea Theatre hosted two free screenings of the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” film, initiated and planned by Agudong and her family to show her “heartfelt thanks” to the Kaua‘i community. Each showing offered an opportunity for attendees to meet and greet with Agudong.

The Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre collaborated to make this happen as a tribute to the island and Disney sponsored the event.

In addition, the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau hosted an immersive, “Lilo & Stitch – Where It All Began” press trip bringing national journalists to explore the film’s inspirational locations like Hanapēpē Town, alongside unforgettable island adventures and a special dinner and hula performance at Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i by Miss Aloha Hula 2025, Jaedyn Pavao.

The Stitch cut-out will remain on display at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay through the end of the month for fans to enjoy.
