Kaua‘i Fire Department urges community to celebrate fire safe this 4th of July

Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds the public as the 4th of July holiday weekend approaches to celebrate safely and responsibly when using fireworks.

Consumer fireworks/firecrackers are only allowed to be ignited from 1 to 9 p.m. July 4.

Fireworks can only be ignited on private property during this time, and setting fireworks off on public property — including streets, sidewalks and parks — is illegal.

Removing the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any fireworks is strictly prohibited.

Kaua‘i Fire Department urges everyone to follow these fireworks/firecracker safety tips:

• Aerials and illegal fireworks are dangerous and against the law.
• Don’t use fireworks during high wind or dry conditions — brushfires can spark fast.
• Supervise keiki closely around all fireworks, including sparklers.
• Have a hose or bucket of water ready to douse any unexpected fires.
• Clean up your area — leave no trace in the community or on the beach.

Also remember that a valid permit is required to purchase firecrackers.

Firecracker permit applications are available through July 3, and permits can be obtained online or in person at Kaua‘i Fire Department Headquarters, located at 4444 Rice Street, Suite 315, in Līhuʻe.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A smartphone or tablet is recommended when applying online to assist with uploading a valid photo identification. Once an online application is approved, the permit will be emailed to the applicant.

Regardless of application process and approval, however, all permits must be printed and validated in person at Kaua‘i Fire Department Headquarters.

Fire Department staff are available to assist in person for people who need help creating a Connect Kaua‘i account or printing their permits.

Payments can be made online through the Connect Kaua‘i portal or in person using cash or check. Checks should be made payable to the Kaua‘i County Director of Finance.

Applicants must also be at least 18 years old.
