Two people rescued off Kaua‘i trails over the weekend
Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel conducted two rescues on Sunday in separate incidents at Kalalau Beach and Waipo‘o Falls Trail in Kōke‘e.
The first incident occurred at Kalalau Beach and involved a distressed resident from Hanalei.
According to preliminary reports from Kaua‘i Fire, first responders were dispatched shortly after 9:15 a.m. Personnel from the Hanapēpē Fire Station, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and Truck 7 responded.
Air 1 arrived on scene at approximately 9:50 a.m. and discovered a male hiker with alleged stomach issues who was unable to hike.
First responders transported the individual from Kalalau Beach to the Waimea Ballpark Landing Zone, where he was transferred to awaiting medics and firefighters for further assessment.
The scene was cleared shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Later that day, firefighters responded to a second rescue at the Waipo‘o Falls Trail involving a 44-year-old female visitor from California who suffered an apparent ankle injury.
The call was received shortly after 5:45 p.m., and units from the Waimea and Hanapēpē fire stations, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and American Medical Response responded.
According to a preliminary report, due to weather conditions, Air 1 landed near the scene, and personnel hiked in to assist the hiker using a carry seat. She was flown to a nearby landing zone and transferred to awaiting medics.
All responding units cleared the scene shortly after 7:20 p.m.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds all hikers to be prepared for changing trail conditions, wear proper footwear, and stay hydrated when venturing into remote areas.
