Hawaiʻi libraries launch 2025 Summer Reading Challenge with prizes and a new look
Hawaiʻi’s public libraries are inviting readers of all ages to take part in the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, themed “Mele,” a statewide celebration of poetry, chants, music and storytelling. The program runs from June 1 to July 31.
Participants can earn prizes—including snack cards, stickers, books and tote bags—for reaching reading milestones. Those who complete the challenge will be entered to win the grand prize: four round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines.
“In 2025, we want to get at least 25,000 Hawaiʻi residents enrolled into the Summer Reading Challenge,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich. “Reading brings joy at every age. Whether you’re sharing a book with your keiki or exploring a new topic, summer is the perfect time to rediscover the power of reading.”
Register for the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library or Beanstack: Reading Challenges.
On Oʻahu, the challenge kicks off with a free public event at the Hawai‘i State Library in Honolulu on Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The celebration will feature keiki activities and a concert by local music group Kawao.
This year’s challenge also celebrates the launch of the library system’s new look.

“Our new brand is a heartfelt mahalo to the many voices that helped shape it,” Aldrich said. “This design reflects the strength of our 51 branches across six islands—working together to serve the people of Hawaiʻi.”
The 2025 Summer Reading Challenge is supported by Friends of the Library of Hawaiʻi, Alaska Airlines, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii, Pizza Hut Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union and local Friends chapters across the state.
