“We stand united this week to honor the fallen and to recognize the dedication and hard work of those who protect and serve our communities every day,” Kaua‘i Police Chief Todd Raybuck said in a release about the Police Week observance. “We are deeply grateful for their service and commitment to the safety and well-being of Kaua‘i.”

National Police Week was established in 1962 by U.S. Congress. It is dedicated to remembering those officers who gave their lives in the line of duty and honors those who continue to serve.

There will be 345 fallen officers’ names added this year to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., including 148 officers who lost their lives in 2024 and 197 others who died in previous years but whose sacrifices were yet officially recognized.

The nation paused Thursday, May 15, on National Peace Officers Memorial Day, for an entire day of reflection during Police Week on the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers who lost their lives while on duty and show support for the survivors they left behind.

Residents are encouraged to reflect on the service of law enforcement officers and express their appreciation for the men and women in blue who dedicate their lives to serving the community.

National Police Week and National Peace Officers Memorial Day are reminders of the extraordinary courage and commitment that law enforcement officers display in their daily lives to protect and serve others.
