The Hawaiʻi State Legislature has passed Senate Bill 1511 that limits the size of vessels allowed into Hanalei Bay, a popular recreational spot on the North Shore of Kaua‘i.

To help preserve the natural beauty of the bay, and to protect its calm waters and ensure it remains a safe space for residents and visitors, the proposed measure prohibits vessels longer than seventy-five feet from entering. The bill exempts boats operated by a federal, state or county agency.

“Hanalei Bay is a special place, not just for Kauaʻi, but for all of Hawaiʻi,” said Senate President Ronald D. Kouchi, who represents District 8 on Kauaʻi. “This bill reflects our commitment to protecting it for future generations, as we prioritize the safety of families and visitors who enjoy its waters every day.”

House Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura, who represents House District 15 on Kauaʻi, added: “Our community has spoken loud and clear. Hanalei Bay is a treasure, and this bill is a critical step in preserving the natural beauty of this scenic bay, while protecting residents’ access to fishing, swimming, surfing and traditional water activities.”

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will be tasked with defining the boundaries of Hanalei Bay and enforcing the new rule.

The bill will now head to Gov. Josh Green for consideration.
