Update: Flood watch canceled for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau
Update at 1:49 a.m. April 24: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has canceled the flood watch that was in effect until Thursday morning, April 24, for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
Forecasters report flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.
Original post at 3:20 p.m. April 23: Pockets of moderate to heavy rain are expected to produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour locally over portions of Kaua‘i through most or all of tonight.
The likelihood of those conditions has caused forecasters at the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu to issue a flood watch for the Garden Isle and Ni‘ihau that is now in effect until tomorrow morning of April 24.
Flash flooding caused by the excessive rainfall also is possible.
Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas could be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams.
Urban areas might experience even more significant flooding and property damage could be more severe in those places because of rapid runoff.
The public is advised to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
