REMINDER: Vidinha Stadium in Līhuʻe closed through December for improvements
Kaua‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation reminds the community that Vidinha Stadium in downtown Līhuʻe is closed through December because of the $12.2 million phase one of an underway improvement project.
Parks and Recreation Director Pat Porter said the stadium closure is necessary out of construction and safety concerns for the public. However, not all parts of the popular 34-acre Antone “Kona” Vidinha Jr. Memorial Stadium complex on Ho‘olako Street are shuttered.
“Park users are welcome to use the soccer and baseball fields for recreational activities during this closure,” Porter said.
Signs are posted around the Vidniha Stadium grounds informing the public about the closure, which began in March.
The stadium — built in the 1970s and the only venue large enough on the Garden Isle to accommodate more than 1,000 people — is named for former Kaua‘i County Mayor Antone “Kona” Vidinha Jr., who served in the post from 1967 to 1972 and was one of the prime movers for its establishment and construction.
The facility offers a wide range of community activities throughout the year, including high school soccer games, graduation ceremonies and fairs, as well as summertime festivals.

Phase one improvements include:
- Demolition and removal of existing field and track.
- Removal of current track implements and scoreboard.
- Installation of synthetic turf field and synthetic track.
- Installation of new track implements and video scoreboard.
The first part of the improvement project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Phase two is expected to commence shortly after; updates will be forthcoming.
