3:15 p.m. March 17 update: A flood watch for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau has been extended till Tuesday at 6 a.m.

Original post: A flood watch is in effect for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau until 6 p.m. today (March 17) as National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu say an unstable and moist weather pattern will persist while a deep low pressure system lingers to the west of the islands.

Despite most of the low-pressure system’s activity staying to the north, where the deep moisture axis is located, pulses of energy pivoting around the upper level low will lead to periods of heavy rainfall as well as the possibility of thunderstorms.

Potential is high for localized heavy showers and storms, increasing the risk for flash flooding from exceessive rainfall, especially if those conditions stall and anchor over one area for an extended period.

National Weather Service forecasters remind the public that:

  • Flood prone roads and other low-lying areas might be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams.
  • Urban areas could receive more significant flooding and property damage because of rapid runoff.

Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

Check the National Weather Service Honolulu forecast office website for the most up-to-date weather information.
