An automated external defibrillator — a portable device that can be used in the event a person’s heart suddenly stops working — is now located at Anahola Marketplace, ensuring quick access in case of cardiac emergency in the Hawaiian homestead community.

“I was told that the only other [automated external defibrillator] in Anahola is with the [Kaua’i] Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards, which is only available while they’re on duty,” said Homestead Community Development Corporation Co-Executive Director Jordyn Danner.

The nonprofit development corporation, founded in in 2009 by the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations to advance solutions in affordable housing, economic development and homestead community capacity building, is the governing entity over the marketplace.

Having an automated external defibrillator accessible in Anahola is not just about saving lives; it’s about empowering every individual to respond in a moment of crisis, ensuring thelp is always within reach.

Every second counts in an emergency.

“By providing access to this [automated external defibrillator], we are taking a proactive step towards safeguarding the health and well-being of our community,” Danner said.

The device was made possible through the generosity of retired Dr. Arnie Serota, Zonta Club of Hānalei, North Shore Gives Foundation and Hawai‘i Heart Foundation.

“This generous donation not only reflects the spirit of community collaboration but also serves as a vital resource that can save lives,” Danner said. “We are grateful for the commitment shown by Dr. Serota and the generosity of all involved to make this possible to enhance our community’s safety and well-being.”

Serota also provides free cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, classes, available for groups of 5 to 20. Classes include:

  • CPR instruction.
  • How to use an automated external defibrillator.
  • How to address choking emergencies in children and adults.
  • How to administer Naloxone (Narcan).
  • How to treat severe bleeding emergencies.

“We would be honored to have Dr. Serota hold some of the free classes at the Anahola Marketplace,” Danner said. “Such important skills to know, that I hope I never have to use.”
