Kava Kaua‘i and Storybook Theatre of Hawai‘i are teaming up for an awesome evening of peace and freedom in Hanapēpē.

They are hosting a Kava Ceremony and Ecstatic Dance in the theatre’s new Arts in Motion Studio, beginning at 6 p.m. today.

The rich tradition of kava — “The Drink of Peace” — and liberation found in ecstatic dance will combine for a truly flowing evening.

Ecstatic dance is a freeform, unchoreographed type of dance often accompanied by a DJ that encourages those who participate to “let go” and move freely. It’s a form of self-expression and connection through music and dance, with no judgement or expectation.

Kava is known for relieving stress and anxiety; however, island cultures from throughout the Pacific, including Hawaiians, have consumed the beverage made from the pulverized roots of the plant as a social beverage and ceremonial libation for centuries.

The evening begins with a traditional kava ceremony led by Kava Kaua‘i’s Gary Mack.

Drinking of kava will be followed by ecstatic dance from 7 to 8 p.m. Playlists will include smooth jazz, zydeco, Hawaiian and new age music.

A donation of $20 for adults is suggested. Audience size will be limited.

Storybook Theatre is located at 3814 Hanapēpē Road.
