Creating Kaua‘i’s ‘field of dreams for future generations’
Kaua‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a groundbreaking ceremony and blessing March 7 to kick off phase one of a $12.2 million county project to upgrade Vidinha Stadium in downtown Līhuʻe.

“This project represents collaboration and partnerships, as it has genuinely been a team effort. This is what is possible when everyone comes together for our community,” said Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami. “Mahalo to all our partners, workers and everyone involved who made this possible. Our island will truly appreciate this field of dreams for future generations.”
The popular 34-acre Antone “Kona” Vidinha Jr. Memorial Stadium complex located on Ho‘olako Street, is managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation. It is Kaua‘i’s only venue large enough to accommodate more than 1,000 people.
Vidinha Stadium was built in the 1970s and named for former Kaua‘i County Mayor Antone “Kona” Vidinha Jr., who served in the post from 1967 to 1972 and was one of the prime movers for its establishment and construction.
It is a versatile space, and continues to host a wide range of activities for the community throughout the year as it has for the past half-century.
Phase one of the project includes demolishing and removing the stadium’s existing track, field, scoreboard and track implements. A new synthetic turf field, synthetic track, video board and track implements will then be installed.
The county opted for organic infill made from coconut husk as the material for the field’s new synthetic turf, often referred to as artificial grass and crafted from synthetic fibers that closely mimic the look and feel of natural grass.
Coconut husk infill will help keep the field cooler and maintain a temperature similar to that of natural grass. Benefits also include year-round play without needing to rest the field, significantly reducing water consumption and eliminating the need for pesticides or fertilizers.
The project gets underway Monday and is estimated to be complete by December. The stadium will be closed for the duration.

Phase 2 of improvements is in the design stage and will include repairing bleachers, replacing the press box, Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades to meet requirements, advanced field lighting systems and remodeling locker rooms, offices, restrooms and concession booths.
Updates about those upgrades will be announced as information becomes available.
