Update at 12:22 p.m. March 4: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report that surf has fallen below advisory levels along north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, so the high surf advisory that was in place has been canceled.
Surf associated with a long-period west-northwest swell moving through the islands will continue to gradually diminish through the rest of the day as the swell eases.
Original post from 7:28 a.m. March 3: A high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i will start at noon.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a long-period west-northwest (300-310 degrees) swell will build through the day, peak overnight and gradually diminish Tuesday by around 6 p.m.
Surf of up to 12 feet along west-facing shores is anticipated and up to 16 feet along north-facing shores.
Impacts are expected to be moderate, with strong breaking waves and strong currents making swimming dangerous.
Beachgoers are advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials.
