Update: High surf advisory canceled for portions of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau
Update at 3:31 p.m. Feb. 15: The high surf advisory for the north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau was canceled. National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report that surf has fallen below the advisory threshold.
The advisory was originally set to be in place through 6 p.m. today because of a large west-northwest swell that kept surf along those shores elevated.
Original post from 10:51 a.m. Feb. 14: A large west-northwest swell will build surf heights to advisory levels by this afternoon along north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau and peak later tonight, keeping surf heightsat advisory levels through Saturday afternoon.
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu extended the high surf advisory for northern shorelines of both islands and issued a new advisory for west shores until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Surf heights of 12 to 18 feet are expected along north-facing shores and 8 to 15 feet along west-facing shores, causing strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming and likely other ocean activities dangerous.
The public is urged and reminded to heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
