The National Weather Service has issued a special marine warning for the Kaua‘i Channel, which separates the island from O‘ahu to the east.

A strong thunderstorm was located at 4:38 p.m. near a buoy off Anahola, moving southeast at 5 knots. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service advises mariners to prepare for gusty winds, steep and fast-building seas, and blinding downpours.

“Stay low or go below, and make sure all on board are wearing life jackets,” an alert stated.
