24-hour lane closure continues on Kaumualiʻi Highway near Kīkīaola boat harbor
Work to replace three 54-inch culverts on Kaumualiʻi Highway near the Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor continues, which means so does the 24-hour closure of one lane of the highway with alternating traffic.
The lane closure, alternating traffic pattern and replacement project originally were estimated to end in December 2024, but the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation now says they likely will continue into March.
Remaining work includes installation of a structure to prevent erosion above the drainage pipe on the makai side (ocean side) of the highway, relocation of the 12-inch waterline, connection of culvert piping between the mauka (mountain side) and makai structure to prevent the erosion above the drainage pipe and final paving, striping and guardrail installation.
Flaggers will continue to provide traffic control through the work zone during active construction, and temporary traffic signals will be provided during non-working hours.
Because of the nature of the work, the speed limit through the work zone is reduced to 10 mph.
Motorists should prepare for delays, obey posted signage and follow directions from the flaggers.
Visit the state Transportation Department website for information about scheduled weekly lane closures.
All projects and lane closures are weather permitting and can change without any notice.
