Update: State cancels high bacteria count notification for Kalapaki Beach Park

Update at 12:33 p.m. Jan. 9: The Hawai‘i Department of Health canceled the high bacteria count notification for Kalapaki Beach Park, located southeast of Līhuʻe on the north end of Nāwiliwili Bay.

Health officials report that water sample retesting results show enterococci levels no longer exceed the threshold level.

Original post at 12:06 p.m. Jan. 8: Hawai‘i Department of Health officials issued a high bacteria count notification for Kalapaki Beach Park, about 5 miles southeast of Līhuʻe on the north end of Nāwiliwili Bay, after levels of 178 per 100 mL were detected recently during routine beach monitoring.

The state Health Department is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample, so it is retesting water at the beach park.

Kalapaki Beach Park has historically met acceptable beach threshold levels, and there is no known source of fecal contamination.

Health Department officials will update the notification retesting results are available.
