Firefighters with Kaua‘i Fire Department on Monday rescued a 51-year-old woman visiting from Illinois who apparently injured her leg while hiking on the Awaʻawapuhi Trail in Kōke‘e.

First responders received a report at about 11:50 a.m. Monday of an injured hiker on the trail. Personnel with the Waimea Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded.

Air 1 was unable to access the area because of heavy cloud cover. Instead, Rescue 3 personnel and Waimea firefighters hiked the trail, arrived at the scene and found the injured woman at about 1:40 p.m.

First responders carried the woman out to the trail parking lot, arriving at about 4:15 p.m.
