Staff from several state and federal agencies responded following the discovery of a dead humpback whale calf on the shore near Kīhei, Maui.

The Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and Division of Aquatic Resources as well as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service are working to dispose of the remains.

Staff from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary are helping responders from those agencies to tow the whale remains offshore, as requested by Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners.
