Update: High surf advisory extended for portions of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau
9 a.m. update Jan. 2: A high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau was extended till Friday at 6 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a large northwest swell (310-320 degrees) will build and peak at advisory levels later today.
Large breaking waves of 10 to 18 feet along exposed north-facing shores are expected along with 8 to 14 feet along exposed west-facing shores.
Original post: A high surf advisory is issued for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i starting at noon.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the surf will build with an incoming northwest swell (310-320 degrees). The advisory is in place till 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Surf will build to 10 to 15 feet along north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, and north-facing shores of O‘ahu. Surf will also build to 8 to 12 feet along west facing shores of O‘ahu.
Additional islands will likely be added to the advisory beyond that.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents are anticipated and will make swimming dangerous.
