Flags ordered at half-staff to honor Carter’s legacy as Biden appoints day of mourning
At the direction of the president of the United States, Gov. Josh Green on Sunday ordered that the US flag and the Hawaiʻi state flag be flown at half-staff at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol and elsewhere for a period of 30 days.
The decision honors the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, who had died earlier Sunday.
“On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, Jaime and I send our aloha and heartfelt condolences to the Carter ‘ohana during this difficult time,” Green said, continuing: “May they find comfort in knowing that his life’s work has left an indelible mark on the world and will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Flags will remain at half-staff until Jan. 28, 2025, in accordance with the president’s proclamation. President Biden further appointed Jan. 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.
