Moloa‘a man dies after ATV he was riding is struck by Toyota Tacoma
A 77-year-old Moloa‘a man is dead after the all-terrain vehicle he was riding was struck by a pickup truck Tuesday afteroon near the 18-mile marker on Kūhiō Highway.
Kauaʻi Police Department identified the man as Stuart Hanchett.
Police report that Hanchett was riding a Kawasaki Prairie quad ATV and attempting to cross the highway sometime about 1:30 p.m. when the ATV was struck by a Toyota Tacoma traveling north.
Hanchett suffered crtitial injuries in the collision and was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe, where he was pronounced dead.
The 69-year-old Princeville man who was driving the Tacoma sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by American Medical Response personnel.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Toxicology reports and an autopsy are pending.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Kūhio Highway near north Ko‘olau Road was closed for nearly 3 hours while detectives with Kaua‘i Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Traffic was diverted through Ko‘olau Road.
Kauaʻi Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department and American Medical Response personnel responded to the crash.
