High surf advisory issued as new northwest swell builds
A new northwest swell is build today and expected to peak tonight before diminishing slightly Wednesday, causing the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu to issue a high surf advisory for north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
The advisory goes into effect at noon today and will remain in place through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Peak surf heights of 12 to 16 feet are forecast along north-facing shorelines, with west-facing shorelines expected to see surf of 8 to 12 feet.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents accompanying the elevated surf will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous in the affected areas.
The public should heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
