Makai lane of Kūhiō Highway reopen near Waikoko hairpin turn
The makai (oceanside) lane of Kūhiō Highway near the Waikoko hairpin turn has reopened after it was closed for a month for emergency slope stabilization.
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reports that emergency shoring and temporary paving were completed Nov. 22; however, additional slope stabilization and construction of a barrier wall are necessary to complete the project.
Slope stabilization is expected to be fully finished by spring 2025.
Intermittent lane closures and full closures of Kūhiō Highway at milepost 4.7 will be scheduled to complete the project. Scheduled lane closures are posted to https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/.
