Update: High surf advisory canceled for north and west shorelines

Update at 4:05 p.m. Nov. 4: The northwest swell impacting north- and west-facing
shores of the Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau has fallen below advisory level.

Therefore, the high surf advisory that was in place for those shorelines has been canceled.

The National Weather Service says conditions could redevelop, however, as multiple northwest and north swells are expected during the course of the next week in response to an active weather pattern in the North Pacific.

Update at 8:21 a.m. Nov. 4: The ongoing medium period, moderate size northwest swell will hold advisory level surf along many north and west exposures of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau into the afternoon hours today.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has therefore extended the high surf advisory in effect for the north- and west-facing shores of both islands until 6 p.m.

The swell will gradually begin fading tonight through Tuesday.

Surf of 12 to 16 feet along the north-facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along west-facing shores is expected.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous in the advisory areas.

The public is advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.

Nov. 3 update: The National Weather Service has extended its high surf advisory for Kaua‘i County through 6 a.m. Monday.

Surf along exposed north and west facing shores will see a reinforcing northwest swell build through the morning hours, and peak Sunday afternoon into the evening, according to the weather service. This swell should steadily fade through Tuesday.

Surf along exposed north and west facing shores will build through the weekend, with a peak expected Sunday as a north-northwest swell moves through.

Expect heights to hover around the advisory levels for the smaller islands through Sunday, then gradually lower early next week as the swell fades.

The weather service reports surf of 10 to 15 feet Saturday, building to 14 to 18 feet on Sunday along north facing shores of Ni‘ihau, Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Molokai and Maui.

On west facing shores Ni‘ihau, Kaua‘i, O‘ahu and Molokai, the weather service reports surf of 8 to 12 feet Saturday, building to 10 to 14 feet.
