Full closure of Hā‘ena-bound lane of Kūhiō Highway now in effect at Waikoko Hairpin Turn
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reports that the full closure of the Hā‘ena-bound lane of Kūhiō Highway (Highway 560) at the Waikoko Hairpin Turn, located at milepost 4.7, began today, a day early, because of field observations.
The closure will continue until further notice.
The full closure was previously set to go into effect Tuesday morning.
Traffic in both directions will be maintained by alternating traffic flow through the remaining open lane. Flaggers will be at the site to direct the alternating traffic.
The lane closure is necessary for emergency slope stabilization work beneath the highway.
The state Transportation Department declared a traffic emergency zone for the area, allowing it to expedite procurment and permitting to act on improvements that will protect access to the state highway.
