Kaua‘i Sea Scouts routine training becomes real-life rescue mission
A routine training mission for a group of quick-thinking Kaua‘i Sea Scouts became a real-life rescue mission recently at Nāwiliwili Harbor.
While staying aboard the vessel Decisive during annual small boat training, Scouts saw a nearby sailboat in distress while attempting to dock after missing its approach and being blown onto the rocks.
Without hesitation, the Sea Scouts — all ages 14 to 20 — sprang into action.
They took control of the situation, equipped with life jackets, radios and towing gear.
The Scouts pulled the distressed sailboat off the rocks in a dramatic tug-of-war from the dock, towing it by hand and safely guiding it into its slip.
They then used their emergency medical training after the vessel was docked to treat the mariners who were aboard for minor injuries.
The mariners were extremely grateful for the timely help, praising the Scouts for their quick response and expertise.
Sea Scouting emphasizes boating and water-based activities for girls and boys ages 14 to 20. These young mariners not only sail and cruise, they also learn navigation, engine work and compete in regional events.
The Kaua‘i Sea Scouts will soon welcome a new 60-foot vessel to their fleet, expanding their opportunities for hands-on training and skill development.
