No swimming advisory issued for Hāʻena Beach Park, Tunnels due to shark sighting

On Monday afternoon, Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau officials advised people not to swim or doing other activities in the water at Hā‘ena Beach Park and the Makua Beach area also known as Tunnels until further notice due to a shark sighting.

A tiger shark, about 10 feet long, was seen on Monday afternoon in waters off Hā‘ena on Kauaʻi’s North Shore. No injuries were reported.

As a safety precaution, ocean safety officials have posted warning signs and will continue to monitor the area.

Lifeguards will reassess the area on Tuesday. If there are no other sightings, Hā‘ena will reopen to ocean activities at noon on Tuesday.

Three days earlier, ocean safety officials also posted shark warning signs after a possible sighting of an unknown species of shark, about 8 to 10 feet long, was thought to be seen 40 feet from shore. Officials pulled the warning signs Sunday when no sharks were observed in the area.
