Community invited to kickoff event for Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week kicks off Saturday.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department, in partnership with the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center, is hosting a kickoff event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to mark the occasion and raise public fire prevention awareness.
The free family event will include informational booths from several agencies and organizations such as the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency, Kaua‘i Police Department, American Red Cross and Kaua‘i County Ocean Safety Bureau.
In addition, there will be fire extinguisher training, hands-on CPR demonstrations, personal wildland fire education and information about the Fall Prevention program for kūpuna.
The kickoff will even include fire trucks, picture-taking with Sparky and Smokey the Bear, games, prizes and more.
Kaua‘i Fire Chief Michael Gibson said it’s an opportunity to bring the department’s partners and community together not just for fun but for education and discussion about how to prevent fires of all kinds — at home and in the wild.
“Besides our community risk reduction programs, we want to introduce our public education curriculum to families to encourage fire prevention conservations that begin at home,” said Gibson.
