AARP Hawaiʻi and US Senator Brian Schatz have announced a telephone forum to discuss the future of Social Security on its 89th birthday.

Schatz will be joined by AARP Government Affairs Director Tom Nicholls on Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m. Nicholls, a Social Security specialist, will answer questions about Social Security myths.

Those who have participated in Telephone Town Halls before will get a call to join the forum at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. Others can call in toll-free at 1-833305-0175 when the Telephone Town Hall begins or watch a Facebook Live simulcast or recording of the event on the AARP Hawai`i Facebook page.

“AARP is a fierce defender of Social Security and encourages everyone to ask Congress to act sooner rather than later to ensure that benefits will not be cut in 2035,” said Kealiʻi Lopez, AARP Hawaiʻi State Director. “We’re grateful to US Sen. Brian Schatz for agreeing to be on our Telephone Town Hall and answer questions from listeners about Social Security’s future.

It’s especially appropriate that the forum is on Aug. 14th because it’s the anniversary of President Truman signing Social Security into law on Aug. 14, 1935.”
